Listen to Dream Awake at MySpace Recently described as "...an acoustic Led Zeppelin with System of a Down vocals!". The story so far: Josh Wilkinson began performing with a unique style of 12-string guitar playing and experimental songwriting in 2002 in hometown Hobart, Tasmania. After a couple of years of professional development Josh began rising steadily on the local scene and having picked up some quality musicians along the way, eventually formed the band Dream Awake. In 2006 he took the band to the thriving scene of Melbourne where they spent the next two years gigging ferociously at major venues and festivals throughout Australia, supporting a number of big name Australian acts and releasing two independent EP's: "The Key Tree" and "Temporary Shore" (both available for purchase online and at gigs).
But a thirst for adventure couldn't be quenched in his own backyard, so after touring Australia, Josh took Dream Awake to the Northern Hemisphere in 2008.
Having set up a temporary home in Ireland to explore his Celtic roots - both musical and spiritual - Josh & Dream Awake embarked on a European tour, an enlightening journey by van spanning countries, language barriers and questionable sleeping arrangements. | |
By 2009, a year of European adventure having passed and a Working Visa steadily approaching expiration, Josh said a tearful goodbye to Ireland and took another oceanic leap, this time landing in Toronto, Canada.
Now officially a citizen of both Australia and Canada, Josh continues to write music in that special "Dream Awake" way, performing regularly in Toronto and occasionally touring to different parts of the country, spreading the love as it were.
Currently a new Dream Awake EP is in the making and as always, plans are being hatched for more international travels of the musical variety.
Thanks for dropping by. Stay tuned and happy listening. ‘The Key Tree’ and ‘Temporary Shore’ EP’s are available online at www.cdbaby.com or through Dream Awake's websites. “Yet another great release from a confident, intelligent & original trio with a strong sense of themselves despite their youth - not afraid to shine in the face of so much contemporary rock mediocrity.” From 'Temporary Shore' EP review by Bradfield Dumpleton for Indie-CD's.com, January 08 “The music moves dynamically with clever lyrics, flawless key changes and smooth time and tempo changes. I'd expect this level of production from Sony BMG, not an independently released record.” From ‘Temporary Shore’ EP review by Vincent Giles for www.melbourne.citysearch.com.au (Furst Media), January 08 “Their sound has been described as acoustic folk rock, but that really does little justice to the startling maturity of their innovative music…Listening to this music I feel the majesty of an eagle soaring through an infinite sky.” From “The Key Tree” EP review by Bradfield Dumpleton for Indie-CDs.com, August ’07 “The singer has a fine, distinctive voice and the delivery showed both he strength and subtlety to do justice to the songs. The bass player and drums powered it along, reminding me of English bands such as Fairport Convention…Young musicians playing with soul and conviction.” From Live review by Neil Wedd for the Indie Initiative, Inpress, June '06 “The front man is an exceptional guitarist and can be compared to classical Blues and Roots artists such as Jeff Lang and John Butler” From Live review by Garrett Bithell & Claire Jarrett for the Indie Initiative, The Brag, November ‘05 “I can imagine ships departing to these songs, the timeless style lends itself to epic journeys” From ‘The Smokey Mirror’ Demo review, TAS Music Press, July ‘05 New EP "Temporary Shore" available now online! Debut EP "The Key Tree" available now online!
